Green transformation and clients’ financial health – we implement our sustainability strategy

mBank is committed to supporting the energy transformation of the economy. In 2022, we allocated almost PLN 636.5 million to the financing of large-scale wind and solar farm projects. Moreover, we raised a total of PLN 275 million in four issues of green bonds. SME clients were offered a new range of photovoltaics lease products and electric car lease products subsidised under the “My Electric Car” (“Mój elektryk”) scheme. We also launched secured and unsecured green loans for businesses.

Last year, individual clients of mBank were granted green mortgage loans totalling PLN 314 million. Socially and environmentally responsible investment strategies accounted for 32% of all investments made by mBank’s private banking clients. In April 2022, we launched payment cards made from 85% recycled plastic. Last year we issued 695,000 such cards and 136,000 digital-only cards, thus cutting the use of plastic by 3.7 tonnes.

In order to reduce our direct impact on the environment, we have been using electricity from renewable sources. At the end of 2022, RES electricity accounted for 100% of mBank’s energy bill (including the purchase of Guarantee of Origin certificates). In the scope covered by our previous year’s report, in 2022 we reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by over 8,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, i.e. by more than one-third. We also joined the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which means that within the next two years we will develop a decarbonisation pathway compliant with the Paris Climate Agreement targets.

Financial health of clients

We care about the financial wellbeing of our clients. We help them bank in a secure and responsible manner and make informed financial decisions.

In December, we signed the Commitment to Financial Health and Inclusion developed by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI). In addition, we launched an educational website Peace of mind (“Spokojna głowa”), featuring tips on how to achieve financial health. We also continue to develop the Personal Finance Manager (PFM) service to help clients manage their household budgets responsibly. At the end of the year, there were 1.5 million clients using this service every month.

mBank regularly hosts cybersecurity awareness programmes. In 2022, as part of the “People Are Awesome” (“Ludzie są niesamowici”) campaign, we reminded internet users about the most common mistakes they tend to make while browsing the internet that may lead to the loss of data and money. Our campaign has reached more than 17 million people.

Social responsibility

mBank has been engaged in social initiatives for years. The 30th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP) was supported by 1,170 mBank employees from across Poland. Our clients donated a total of PLN 20 million, to which we added another PLN 2 million as part of our “100 for 100” initiative. Over the last five years we donated PLN 16.7 million to WOŚP, with the donations of our clients reaching a staggering PLN 76 million.

We also support the victims of war in Ukraine. We enabled easy and secure online donations to the Polish Centre for International Aid Foundation (PCPM). By the end of 2022, mBank clients donated nearly PLN 13.8 million to the PCPM Foundation. In addition, we turned our former offices in Warsaw into educational centres. Every day up to 440 Ukrainian children and their guardians take advantage of them.

In 2022, mFoundation allocated more than PLN 2.7 million to education and promotion of mathematics. Among others, the foundation published the book entitled “Maths the Green Way” (“Matematyka na zielono”), which teaches mathematics, while at the same time raising environmental awareness. Free copies of the book were handed out to over 37,000 readers.

In turn, “m for mBank’s art collection” (“m jak malarstwo”) initiative supports promising young Polish artists. Via this fund, from 2020 to 2022, we purchased 98 works by 62 authors.
